Who will be the first to sue Donald Trump for slander?

Deception about the election will have consequences.

Even as the recounts continue, people are probably zooming with their lawyers, drafting defamation complaints against Donald Trump. It’s the natural consequence of someone lying, especially in a very public way, about another person or organization.

E. Jean Carroll is currently suing the president for defamation after he claimed she was lying in her allegations about him raping her in a department store dressing room. The case is moving forward, with an initial conference scheduled for December 11th in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Ms. Carroll’s case predates the current election controversy.

Currently, the president is spending his days on Twitter or in public, making statements that appear to be without sufficient evidence, and may indeed, prove to be completely false. And if they are, who is harmed? Who has recourse?

As a lawyer, I take the president’s allegations of fraud and crimes involving the 2020 election seriously. Allegations, whether they are about election fraud or sexual assault, deserve investigation and if they have any foundation…
